While numerous traditional Easter activities involve plastic or packing in some form, that doesn't mean that you have to resign yourself to a wasteful celebration. There are ways that you can reduce your waste at Easter and, as zero waste options often are, it can be more fun!

Easter Treats

  • Buy your treats packaging-free from bulk bins or zero waste stores
  • Make your own chocolate. You can often find the ingredients for this in packaging free stores. If you don't have one locally, you can purchase online from numerous places around NZ. Check out The Rubbish Trip's Zero Waste Shopping Guide
  • Make shortbread biscuits shaped like eggs
  • If you want to have an Easter egg hunt but only have loose chocolate, you can use reusable Easter egg pouches, jars or homemade boxes

Decorations

There are so many Easter crafting ideas on the internet, below are a few that we have chosen to showcase as they are easy to do with minimal waste or use items that would otherwise be destined for landfill. Another thing to bear in mind when crafting for festivities is to consider making things that you can use for other events as well, or that you might use throughout the year - that way the end product can get more use over its lifetime.
